I saw jets of light shining from cities and villages, and from the high places and the low places of the earth. God's word was obeyed, and as a result there were memorials for Him in every city and village. His truth was proclaimed throughout the world. --Testimonies, vol. 9, pp. 28, 29. {ChS 112.2}

Sanctuary Prayer (The Sanctuary Safari)

This is a review of the seventh prayer "tour" in Dorothy Eaton Watts's book "Prayer Country: A Tour Guide to the Wonders of Prayer".  Dorothy has labeled it "The Sanctuary Safari" since it is based on 'stations' of the Sanctuary with the goal of understanding our Saviour's role in the Heavenly Sanctuary, the shadow of which existed back in the days of Moses.

A couple of summers ago we were privileged to tour a real-size replica of the Sanctuary at the British Columbia Conference of Seventh-day Adventists' Camp Meeting. The model helped us to understand the meanings of the rituals performed back in the time before Jesus walked upon the Earth.  Watts's explanation of Sanctuary Prayer is set up to illustrate the same principles.

Using the symbols of The Gate we begin our prayer tour with praise and thanksgiving (Psalm 100:4); The Altar of Sacrifice- we confess the sins we have committed, which get in the way of a holy relationship with our Creator; The Laver- we accept Christ's cleansing on our behalf (1 John l:9);The Candlestick- the oil in the candlestick represents the Holy Spirit, and we ask here for an infilling, an anointing; The Table of Shewbread- representing Christ as the Bread of Life, another reference to the Bible-- here we can continue to read in the Bible until we come to a place that is emphasized for us by the Holy Spirit, our own personal words from God; The Altar of Incence- places us right before the very Throne of God, the incense being the freely-given Grace of God through His Son's death for our sins; The Most Holy Place- in the desert, the High Priest alone entered the Most Holy Place once a year on the Day of Atonement.  In this place, today, you have the opportunity to be in God's presence daily and to have him search your heart and motives and reveal to you what changes you need to make.
Watts suggests that an enhancement would be to study "The Tabernacle and its Services" in Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 343-358.  In the Bible you can read: Exodus 25-40; Leviticus 4 and 16.
